About me

Mathematics is about more than finding answers. I am interested in what happens when we help people see what mathematics can mean.

I am a mathematics educator, researcher and university professor in the Department of Mathematics at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. I am the Director of the Mathematics and Statistics Help (MASH) Centre.

My work explores how people learn, engage with and make meaning from mathematics. A central thread in my work is the belief that mathematics is more than a collection of techniques to be mastered. It is a way of thinking, modelling the world, communicating ideas and making sense of complex problems. My research explores how students encounter mathematics and how teaching can create richer opportunities for participation, curiosity and understanding.

I am especially interested in storytelling and narrative in mathematics education. Through my work on Mathstory and narrative pedagogy, I explore what happens when students are invited not simply to solve mathematics, but to use it to tell stories about people, problems and the world around them.

Alongside my research, I design and teach university mathematics, lead educational initiatives, collaborate with researchers and educators internationally, and work to translate research into practices that can make mathematics more meaningful, accessible and human.
